60 Wall Street, POPS

Privately owned public spaces, or POPS, are an important part of the fabric of New York’s city planning.

Ever since a new zoning resolution in 1961, private developers in NYC have been granted permission for bonus private space, in exchange for developing localised areas of the public realm. The result is city that boasts over 500 of these so-called POPS; tranquil spaces for the public to sit, reflect, and watch the world go by.

Here on 60 Wall Street, this immaculately tiled, marble-pillared atrium – complete with indoor palm trees – conveys the extravagant identity of Wall Street, all while providing the city’s bankers with a warm place to take their lunch.
