Sydney: the coffee capital of Australia?

The rich, fresh, and smooth blend of beans in Sydney certainly puts its coffee culture up there as one of the best in the world. The only question here is: does Sydney or Melbourne clinch the title?

But the passion for and cultivation of good coffee here is more than just a matter of pride – it is a symbol and an influencer of Sydney’s sense of place.

When Italian migrants arrived on the shores of Australia in the wake of the Second World War, they brought with them a ritual of coffee drinking that would set the country on a new course; away from its colonial, anglophone, tea-drinking past.

Armed with the Gaggia machine and an expensive new commodity, even today, Sydney’s coffee-infused culture continues to stand for cosmopolitanism, globalism, and quality.
